Over 30 people die in blasts in Nigeria

Deadly bomb blasts in Yola market place leave an estimated 30 people dead

Over 30 people have died and scores others injured in an explosion in the Nigerian city of Yola, according to international reports.

According to the BBC, the blast struck a busy market area where traders were closing up for the day.

The city, in the northern Adamawa state, has been hit by deadly bombings twice this year according to reports.

Reports claim that Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari visited Yola on Saturday, declaring that the Islamist militant movement Boko Haram was close to defeat, but the city is one of the worst hit by the insurgency.

Boko Haram was founded in 2002, as an opposition to Western-style education, but the group launched military operations in 2009, killing thousands and abducting hundreds since then. The BBC adds that the group had joined the s-called Islamic State as it continued to spread across the country. However, regional forces have managed to retake many territories throughout the year.
