German Chancellor Angela Merkel was chosen as the Person of the Year, by TIME Magazine.

Merkel, who faced the immigration crises during her time in the leader’s seat, won the race for person of the year leaving other controversial names behind.

The list of nominees included Caitlyn Jenner, Russian President Vladimir Putin, American presidential candidate Donald Trump and even ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

TIME Magazine editor Nancy Gibbs said that Merkel handled a vast array of issues ranging from the European economic crises and the exodus of immigrants in Europe. Gibbs said that none of the nominees was tested as she was.
