In a speech at Japan’s Yokota air base, close to Tokyo, US President Donald Trump pledged that he would make sure the military had the required resources necessary to defend freedom and keep the peace.

“No-one, no dictator, no regime… should underestimate American resolve,” Trump said, in a thinly veiled reference to the North Korean regime.

Trump’s Asian tour will be longest of any US president in 25 years, and will see him visit five countires in 11 days.

His visit comes at a time of increased tensions with North Korea over its testing of nuclear weapons.

He informed reporters on board Air Force one that he intended to meet Russia’s president Vladimir Putin during his trip.
