Flight attendant sacked after putting a toddler in an overhead locker

According to the Australian newspaper Herald Sun, the Australian airline Virgin Blue has sacked a flight attendant who put a toddler in an overhead locker.

Natalie Williamson claimed that her 17-month-old son was placed in locker by a steward while on a flight from Fiji to Sydney three months ago.

Whilst the airline has also offered free flights to the mother,  it said the flight attendant put the toddler in the compartment because he was taking part in a peek-a-boo game with him and Williamson’s estranged husband.

But Williamson’s version of the story is different from that of the steward: “My husband was standing one metre behind my son when the air steward picked him up and placed him in the overhead compartment.

“I stood up and there were people laughing and then I said ‘Get my son of there now’”, she said. “I was devastated. I was absolutely devastated. I was crying. My husband was in shock. For days on end I was crying.”

The newspaper also reported that the toddler was locked in the compartment in complete darkness for a reported 10 seconds, and has since been suffering from anxiety.
