Meridianbet donates funds for COVID-19 solidarity response plan

Meridianbet truly believes that the pandemic cannot be fixed and healed by one individual or country alone. We’re all in this together

Meridianbet has always prioritised the needs of others; often donating to good causes, to make their voice heard and encourage others to do the same. This year is no different, especially when taking into consideration the fact that the world is currently going through a pandemic.

The company has donated €2,000 to what is called the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, which is supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), in collaboration with the UN Foundation and a global network of fiduciary partners.

At the time of writing this article, $247,527,116 was raised and committed, from almost 670,000 donors.

What is the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund?

The pandemic is affecting the world as a whole, having dire effects on several communities and societies.

The Fund is the first way that people, companies and even philanthropies can contribute to WHO and its partners’ global response efforts, and the fastest way to get resources, exactly where they are needed.

Thus far, almost $170 million of the Fund was received by the WHO, to procure and distribute essential commodities an coordinate response. $10 million was sent to CEPI, to coordinate and catalyse the global vaccine R&D, $20 million to the World Food Programme to support the shipment of vital commodities, another $10 million to UNICEF to support vulnerable communities in low-resource environments. There’s more! Another $10 million was received by the UNHCR to protect internally displaced people and refugees who are at risk and finally, $2.6 million was sent to the World Organisation of the Scout Movement, to alleviate COVID-19’s negative impact on youth development.

How are the funds being used?

The Fund supports WHO and their partners to make sure that all countries, on a global scale, can prevent, detect and respond to COVID-19. The ten priorities of need have been highlighted as the following:

  • Coordination, planning, financing and monitoring
  • Risk communication, community engagement and infodemic management
  • Surveillance, outbreak investigation and calibration of public health and social measures
  • Points of entry, international travel and transport and mass gatherings
  • Laboratories and diagnostics
  • Infection prevention and control, and protecting the work force
  • Case management, clinical operations and therapeutics
  • Operational support and logistics
  • Strengthening essential health services and systems
  • COVID-19 vaccination.
