Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that one person was injured after an explosion outside their hotel that damaged the team’s bus.

The individual has been taken to hospital and the bus has been damaged in two places, Dortmund said in a statement.

“There was an incident on departure of our bus. One person was injured. More information will follow,” the club’s official Twitter account confirmed.

Another update said: “Bomb explosion near the team bus at the hotel. The players are safe. No danger in the stadium.”

The German side are due to play AS Monaco in a Champions League quarter-final at the Westfalenstadion tonight. 

According to reports by Bild, the German newspaper, an explosion occurred on the bus just 10 kilometres from Signal Iduna Park, the club’s home ground.

The two teams collide in the Champions League quarterfinals tonight, with Borussia Dortmund hosting Monaco in the first leg of their series on Tuesday. 

Dortmund, fresh off a humbling loss to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, is hoping for a more fit squad, with Thomas Tuchel's club fighting the injury bug at an inopportune time.

Monaco overcome Tottenham in the group stage and ousted Manchester City in the round of 16 in a high-scoring, entertaining series.
