Porsche in Paqpaqli crash ‘wasn’t performing drifting displays’, association says

The £750,000 Porsche Spyder which crashed into a crowd, injuring 26, was not performing drifting displays, the Malta Drifting Association said.

The association issued a statement after a section of the media reported that the supercar had been drifting.

British millionaire Paul Bailey, from the East Midlands, was behind the wheel of his Porsche Spyder when it allegedly clipped the grass at high speed. The car skidded out of control, crashing into the barriers and crowds.

A 6-year-old girl and her mother are amongst those critically injured. Five were in critical condition, but one has taken a turn for the better.

Wishing a speedy recovery to all those injured during the Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina, the association said that the “unfortunate accident was not caused by the Porsche doing ‘drifting’ displays. Drifting was being held in another area.”

The association also disassociated itself from a drifting display held at Notte Bianca on Saturday. “We also saw comments on social media and news reports about a drifting display that was held at Notte Bianca last Saturday. The Malta Drifting Association disassociates itself from such activity, as there where also comments of lack of safety.”

 The Malta Drifting Association, it added, holds its displays in the safest environment possible taking all necessary precautions: “The activity held at St. Elmo was not a drifting display.”
