The Malta Tourism Authority’s German office and renowned German ice hockey club Düsseldorfer EG have announced that they will partner up for a year under the motto “fire and ice”.

DEG is one of Germany’s most renowned professional ice hockey clubs and an eight-time German champion thanks to today’s innovative management team, young coaches and players committed to excellence.

Malta will benefit from varied exposure in DEG’s home stadium, the “ISS Dome”. Ice hockey is amongst the most popular spectator sports in Germany, thanks in part to its family-friendly audience.

The Maltese Islands will be exposed to the DEG supporters as well as supporters of visiting teams.  Besides exposure at the stadium, extensive TV, radio and social media coverage will be generated directly and indirectly through this partnership.

This partnership goes in line with further sports marketing-related initiatives by MTA Germany – for springtime 2017, a pan-European “old boys team” football tournament in Malta is planned, involving around 16 teams from Germany, the UK and Austria. Furthermore, as part of the partnership, a trip to Malta will be organised for the DEG team and DEG supporters during 2017.

“I am very pleased about such an exciting partnership. The MTA recognises the big potential of promoting itself through DEG. This collaboration boosts the brand values of DEG: Traditional yet innovative and dynamic. We had very good and fruitful talks and came up with a lot of fantastic ideas – which the supporters can look forward to through this partnership,” managing director of DEG Eishockey GmbH Paul Specht said.

“Within the framework of this new cross-marketing initiative, Malta’s sun and warmth meet the cold and fascination of the ice and the fastest team sport in the world. A very appealing contrast providing exciting opportunities,” MTA CEO, Paul Bugeja said.

Bugeja added that such a collaboration will be of great benefit to the Maltese Islands, as greater exposure is achieved with a niche that might not have been previously targeted and in a country where huge potential for Malta still exists.
