NEWS | Wednesday, 19 March 2008 Dead body washes ashore at Exiles, Sliema Strollers at the popular beach of Exiles in Sliema were greeted with a macabre sight at around 1.15pm yesterday, when the dead body of an unidentified adult white man was seen floating very close to shore.
Fully clothed and floating face upwards, the corpse eventually washed up on the shallow reef that marks the rocky Sliema coastline, and was retrieved by members of the police force for further investigation. A photograph of the man’s face was later released for identification purposes, but at 7.45pm yesterday the police’s PR unit issued a statement announcing that the man had been identified as a 66-year-old Maltese national from St Julian’s. His name was however withheld, in keeping with normal police procedure in such cases. Duty magistrate Antonio Mizzi has appointed a team of experts, and will be heading an inquiry into the incident. The cause of death was not established by the time of going to print. The police are not suspecting foul play, although an onsite police officer told MaltaToday that it was too early to be sure.
