New boathouse sprouts under Valletta bastions

James Debono

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority has issued an enforcement notice against an illegally constructed room right beneath St Elmo Fort, an area already occupied by rows of green wooden structures used as “boathouses”.
This area is accessible through Jews Sally Port just below Auberge de Baveria.
The new concrete structure jars completely with the other wooden stuctures which are already considered an eyesore.
MEPA had already issued an enforcement order against another illegal room in the same location in 2005. The case was referred to direct action two years ago but no subsequent action was taken.
Another enforcement action in the same area issued in 1997 has not even been referred for direct action.
