The bodies of at least 14 migrants have been recovered by the Italian authorities around 50 miles SW of Lampedusa in Maltese territorial waters yesterday night.
Italian sources said the gruesome discovery was made earlier in the day by the aircraft ‘Atlantique’ belonging to the Italian Navy.
The Italian Navy vessel ‘Chimera’, the Italian coastguard patrol boat ‘Peluso’ and a vessel and a helicopter from the Carabinieri military police were immediately despatched on site to recover the bodies.
The boat on which the migrants were travelling has not been found yet, and the recovery operation was expected to continue till the early hours of this morning.
Another 10 migrants were still missing at sea after their boat capsized 60 nautical miles to the south of Malta on Friday. The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) stopped the search for the bodies the next day.
