Three recipes to make use of local pomegranates

We try our best to stick to seasonal produce and this is the season for pomegranates. Get some ideas for how to use them right here.

Pomegranates are everywhere right now. Take a walk through the countryside and you’ll see plenty of trees with bright red arils bursting out of their tough skins, some falling to the ground and going to waste.

These Middle Eastern fruits are great with both sweet and savoury recipes or could simply be peeled and eaten as they are.

Rose meringues with pomegranates and pistachios

Easy to prepare, these meringues are as pretty as they are tasty. Add pomegranate seeds and pistachios for a brilliant burst of colour, texture and flavour.

If you’re looking for a fancy dessert that is easy to make this has to be it. Meringues take no more than a few minutes to make and the added rose water give the meringue a little bit more flavour. A drop of red food colouring and your meringues are transformed into pink clouds of sugar. Serve with freshly whipped cream, pomegranate seeds and pistachios for added colour as well as texture and flavour.

Pomegranate and mint tea

Pomegranates come into season just at the time we feel the need for warm drinks. Staying away from tea or coffee because of the caffeine need not deprive you from the cosiness of a hot cup of something under a blanket. Simply boil a pomegranate with some mint for a healthier cuppa.

Packed with antioxidants, pomegranate tea is touted with health benefits like improving cardiovascular health, boosting the immune system, stabilising blood sugar and reducing the risk of diabetes as well as reducing the risk of cancer. Pomegranates are known to be anti-infalmmatories, with some studies suggesting that regular intake of pomegranate has reduced the effect of conditions such as osteoarthritis.

Citrus and pomegranate salad

Are you looking for a lighter dessert? Sweet, salty and brightly coloured, this citrus salad with bright red pomegranate seeds ticks all the boxes. A tiny bit of orange blossom water makes it so much more than just a boring old fruit salad.
