Following a call for proposals earlier this year, a project has been chosen as the artistic statement to represent the Maltese republic.

Austin Camilleri's 'Bl-Oħla Dawl Libbist' was selected through a public competition, coordinated by Heritage Malta on behalf of the Office of the Prime Minister. Local and foreign proposals vied for the opportunity to create a modern, cutting-edge art statement to represent the Republic.

A disused ditch at the end of Republic Steet is the location for the winning proposal. The project serves as a means of communication between Main Gate and the other end of the city, properly placed on the axis and tip of Republic Street.

Including themes of light, movement and space, the project embodies the perpetual evolution and development of a people, triggered by the republican movement. It also hopes to contribute to the regeneration of one of the lesser developed areas of Valletta.

The chosen project will now proceed with the necessary reviews in order to establish timeframes and related technicalities.
