Survey reveals which lucky numbers gamblers use most
Despite the growing use of data and technology in gaming, a new study shows gamblers continue to rely on lucky numbers, personal traditions and birthdays when placing their bets.
Sweepspulse.com, an industry leader providing information about the sweeps casino industry has completed a new study to examine which lucky number players choose to bet with, select when playing slots, and use when purchasing lottery tickets. The study included responses from nearly 2400 U.S. based active players at casinos and/or sweepstakes sites. It demonstrated that there was some commonality in what numbers players chose for their bets/slots/pay lines/lottery tickets; regardless of the type of games they are betting on. Players’ superstitions/birthdays/cultural influences contributed to this preference; and show no signs of diminishing, despite an increasingly data-driven approach to gaming using technology.
Some of the key findings in this study included:
- The number 7 was used as the luckiest number by 34 percent of the participants
- The number 3 was found to be the next favourite (used by 21 percent), followed very closely by the number 21 (chosen by 18 percent)
- On average, the respondents use 5 lucky numbers for each lottery session.
- 42% of participants indicated that one of their “lucky” numbers is associated with a birthday or anniversary date.
- 12% of those surveyed said that they pick all of their numbers randomly.
- 29% percent said they will switch to a new lucky number after experiencing a series of losses
Younger gamblers (18-34) preferred numbers that have ties to pop culture (jersey #s, release dates) than older players (over 50) who relied upon family birthdays and their own personal tradition. There was also a slight geographic variation, in that gamblers from the Northeast were more likely to prefer 21, and gamblers from the South were more loyal to 7. “Personal lucky numbers are a part of people’s gaming habits for thousands of years,” said SweepsPulse.com lead research analyst Maria Chen. “Regardless of whether you’re playing slots based on algorithms, or sports bets based on data - players choose numbers that mean something to them personally because they add to the personal nature of what can be a completely random experience.”
The survey results also showed that gamers who were able to consistently pick their own “lucky” numbers, which they had chosen prior to playing, experienced a greater sense of satisfaction than those who changed their selections from one spin or draw to another; regardless of whether the actual frequency of winning was similar between the two groups. This appears to be due to an emotional level of confidence and comfort with selecting a predetermined set of numbers as opposed to the influence of selecting any given set of numbers upon the outcome of each individual play.
