Five arrested over alleged drug trafficking ring
Police say the group allegedly formed part of an organised crime network moving synthetic cannabis and cocaine across Malta
Five people, four men and a woman, have been arrested following an intensive investigation into an alleged organised crime group involved in drug trafficking.
According to the Police, the suspects were apprehended after simultaneous searches were carried out at four different properties in Hal Gaxaq, Birgu and Haz-Zabbar.
The raid in Hal Ghaxaq led to the arrest of three people who were allegedly caught in the act of packaging various types of drugs into bags.
Police seized around 140 packets of a substance suspected to be synthetic cannabis, around 30 packets suspected to be cocaine, and three further packets allegedly containing cannabis from the residence.
A large quantity of luxury clothing, electronic goods, jewellery and around €2,000 in cash were also seized from the same property.
Four vehicles were also seized during the investigation – a BMW 850i, a Range Rover Sport, a Peugeot van and an Opel.
Two further people were arrested after they went to a garage in Haz-Zabbar, allegedly attempting to move the BMW before it could be seized by the Police.
All five are expected to be arraigned in court today at around noon, before Magistrate Jean Paul Grech.
A Magisterial Inquiry into the case has been opened, led by Magistrate Renata Farrugia
