Teenager who died in car crash identified as Kelly Caruana

Kelly Caruana has been identified as the teenager who died in hospital following a car crash in Qormi last week

Caruana’s father shared a message on social media, “Our precious, we will always love you, me and your mother and your siblings, we will never, ever forget you, light and watch over us from above, I know Nannu and Nanna welcomed you in their embrace, my heart will love you forever, from your dad.”

The crash happened on 21 August, at around 8:15pm, in Triq tal-Bajjada, Qormi. Police say a 20-year-old man from Birkirkara lost control of the Renault Clio he was driving and crashed into a barrier. 

Caruana was a passenger in the car. Both were given medical assistance at the scene and taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance. 

Days later, police say her condition worsened, and she was later confirmed to have died. The case has been reported to Magistrate Dr Joe Mifsud, who has opened an inquiry, and police investigations are continuing.

The 18-year-old, from Paola, was a dancer with Lookstar Dancers Tarxien.

In a tribute, the group wrote on Facebook: “Today, our Family and School are deeply saddened by the loss of our beautiful Kelly. Kelly was one of our dancers who grew up with us and became a beautiful part of our school’s journey. A shy, gentle soul with the sweetest heart and a smile that could light up any room.”

Fondazzjoni Nazareth, her mother’s workplace, also joined in the tribute: “Today, the Fondazzjoni Nazareth Family is deeply saddened by the loss of Kelly, a beautiful girl whose gentle and sweet character, kind heart and beautiful, infectious smile touched the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know her,” the foundation said, describing her as “the daughter of one of our dedicated carers.” 

It added: “Although her life was too short, the beautiful memories she leaves behind will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved and knew her,” and offered condolences to her parents and family.
