Roommates sentenced after dispute over household expenses turns physical

Two roommates have been sentenced after a disagreement between people sharing a Birkirkara residence developed into a physical confrontation.

Both men, who are from Cameroon, pleaded guilty, with the court imposing different sentences on each. The incident arose from tensions over money owed for household utility expenses.

During the proceedings, the court heard that the disagreement eventually became physical. The man involved in the confrontation - another roommate - alleged that he was assaulted by both accused and suffered a slight injury, which he claimed was caused when one of them used a kitchen knife. The defence disputed that account, particularly the circumstances involving the knives.

While questioning the victim, the defence gave a different version of events, arguing that the knives in the residence had been moved and placed somewhere safe so that nobody could make use of them as tensions escalated.

The court also heard about the events immediately preceding the confrontation.

It emerged during cross-examination that the victim had gone to the bedroom of one of the accused and knocked on the closed door several times. When nobody answered, he entered the room anyway. The altercation followed.

Both accused subsequently registered guilty pleas.

In its judgment, the court imposed a suspended prison sentence on one of the men. The other was conditionally discharged.

Inspector Clayton Abela prosecuted, while lawyers Franco Debono, Eman Scicluna and Fleur Abela represented the accused.

Magistrate Elaine Rizzo presided over the case.
