Polish tourist to be arraigned over St Julian’s death

A 27-year-old Polish tourist is expected to be arraigned in court at 11am on Monday in connection with the death of a 31-year-old Moroccan man in St Julian’s on Sunday morning.

The suspect, identified as Sebastian Malinowski, was arrested around 90 minutes after Abdellatif Oumakhlouf was found dead at Spinola Gardens on St George’s Road.

Malinowski, who has been described as a boxer, had reportedly been due to leave Malta today.

Police were alerted at around 6.30am on Sunday and preliminary investigations indicated that an argument had taken place between the two men shortly beforehand. The Polish man allegedly left the scene but was later traced to the St George’s Bay area following an intensive search and an examination of CCTV footage.

Oumakhlouf, who lived and worked in Malta, was found lifeless in the gardens. An autopsy later indicated that he died after falling and hitting his head following the altercation.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud opened an inquiry into the death, while investigations by the police’s Major Crimes Unit and district officers continued.

Malinowski is expected to appear before a court at 11am on Monday.
