Police officer launches defamation case against GWU weekly
Police officer involved in unjust arraignment sues newspaper for defamation.
Police Inspector Elton Taliana has filed a court application against the editor of It-Torca, Aleks Farrugia, claiming that an article regarding the wrongful prosuection of Darryl Luke Borg was defamatory.
Taliana claims the journalist alleged that he was aware of the mistake but failed to react, while officially the police have stated that the mistaken prosecution - over a hold-up in Birkirkara - amounted to a miscommunication between police departments.
Another man admitted to the theft two days after a magistrate remanded Borg in custody. Borg was yesterday freed of all charges.
