Jealous act lands man in custody

Casino worker John Calvert, 39, of Sliema pleaded guilty to hitting Anthony Spicer with a bottle over his head.

The incident happened last Monday at around 7pm in Tower Road, Sliema when the victim was seen having a drink with Calvert's girlfriend. Spicer claimed he was drinking with a woman when the accused hit him from behind. Calvert's girlfriend recognised her boyfriend as the man who assaulted Spicer.

Prosecuting Inspector Alexander Millo explained how Calvert was arraigned under arrest because the police could not confirm where he lived and he claimed he traveled often. He was also charged with disturbing the public peace.

Magistrate Ian Farrugia remanded Calvert in custody until next Monday when the court will deliver the sentence.
