Thief jailed for 30 months

Thief who wished to go to prison to be able to follow a drug rehabilitation programme is jailed for 30 months after he admits to multiple thefts from apartments in Mosta.

Mario Farrugia, 43, of Sliema but residing at Qormi, was jailed for 30 months after admitting to theft from various apartments in Mosta.

Police inspectors Carlos Cordina and Edmund Cushcieri explained how the thefts took place on the night between the 10 and 11 April this year.

Inspector Cushcieri also said that during questioning the accused told him that given his drug problem, he would rather spend two years in prison where he could follow a rehabilitation programme to kick his habit.

Farrugia admitted to stealing electrical wires, cooker points, flex outlets, power sockets and lightning points to the detriment of Christopher Grech, Noel Vella and others. He also pleaded guilty to relapsing and breaching bail. All thefts were committed form the same block of apartments.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri, considered the accused’s guilty plea and sentenced him to 30-month imprisonment.

Legal aid lawyer Noel Bartolo appeared for the accused.
