63-year-old jailed, fined for drug trafficking

Gozitan jailed for two years and fined €3,000 after admitting to trafficking heroin

A 63-year-old man was jailed for two years and fined €3,000 after being found guilty of trafficking heroin.

Grazio Spiteri, of Victoria, was also found guilty of being in possession of heroin and of relapsing. He had admitted to the crimes in May last year.

In his sentence, Magistrate Joe Mifsud, presiding over the Gozo Court, noted that Spiteri had collaborated with the police about who had provided the drugs, and consequently, this warranted a reduction in prison term.

The court also ordered psychological treatment for Spiteri, who will be serving his term at Mount Carmel Hospital.

Police Inspector Malcolm Briffa led the prosecution, while Dr Anthony Stellini represented the accused.
