Woman accused of stealing €21,000 remanded in custody

A woman who pleaded not guilty to stealing €21,000 in cash from a foreigner's handbag was remanded in custody

A Bulgarian woman this morning pleaded not guilty to stealing €21,000 in cash from a 79-year-old woman.

50-year-old Mariya Petrova was accused of stealing the cash from a foreigner's handbag at the airport on 26 March.

Police Inspector Joseph Mercieca, who was prosecuting, said the accused had heard the victim say she was carrying the cash while they were abroad. He said the accused stole it from the bag in Malta in the baggage claim area as the bag was checked for a broken wheel.

The cash stemmed from the sale of a property and has not been recovered.

Petrova was remanded in custody.
