Eye surgeon Franco Mercieca, a former MP, will be a candidate for the Labour Party on the 12 District in the upcoming election.

It was Mercieca who made the announcement when addressing the PL rally in Żejtun on Tuesday evening.

Mercieca had contested his first election in 2013 on the Labour ticket. He was elected and made parliamentary secretary. But his stint in Cabinet was short-lived, having left the post to pursue his medical career. Mercieca stayed on as MP and contested the 2017 election but was not elected. He did not contest the 2022 election.

“I was invited by the prime minister to be an election candidate for the 12 District and I accepted,” Mercieca told the crowd to applause.

He referenced how villages have been "drowned with buildings" and insisted the country needs a Labour government to ensure economic success now translates into a good quality of life.

Clarification: A previous version of this article wrongly stated that Mercieca only contested the 2013 election when in fact he went on to contest the 2017 election as well but failed to get elected.
