The Labour Party (PL) has announced its full list of candidates for the upcoming general election, stressing that almost 40% of the candidates are women.

Made up of 72 candidates, the PL noted that the party has a strong presence of young people, noting that the candidates include people from every sector of society, with different experiences, and competencies in a wide range of fields.

During a speech on Friday, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that all candidates are united under the single one goal of working to make the lives of the Maltese and Gozitans easier and better.

Abela outlined the PL’s vision for another legislature aimed at raising median disposable income to 135% above the EU average while positioning Malta in the top 10 for EU life satisfaction.

Additionally, Abela targets high-value digital sectors to drive roughly two-thirds of Malta’s economic growth, while continuing to decrease the national debt to around 40% of the GDP.

The PL highlighted their plans to invest more into families and businesses, aiming to lower reliance on social assistance by 10% and maintain an unemployment rate of around 3%.

The PL aims to address environmental concerns by sourcing 25% of the nation’s energy from renewables by 2030 and reducing carbon emissions by 40%.

Abela reaffirmed the PL’s focus on equality, pledging to improve LGBTIQ+ rights and narrow the gender pay gap to position Malta as a top-three EU nation.

He outlined the PL’s vision of Gozo as a key economic driver for the country, pledging to tackle double insularity by increasing connectivity by 25% before the next legislature concludes.

Abela said that for all this to occur, Malta requires a strong and dynamic economy which grows by 4% per year for the next four years, insisting that the PL’s electoral manifesto works toward this.
