Prime Minister Joseph Muscat yesterday attended a meeting of Socialist leaders in Madrid, the Labour Party said on Saturday.

During the meeting Frans Timmermans was endorsed as a candidate for the presidency of the European Commission.

While in Spain, the Prime Minister had two formal meeting requests from the UK’s leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn and the Prime Minister of Romania Viorica Dăncilă.

The Labour Party said that during his meeting with Dăncilă, Muscat discussed bilateral relations as well as European policy given that Romania currently hold the presidency of the Council of Europe.

In his meeting with Corybn, Muscat discussed the present Brexit situation, with Corbyn making clear his position going forward.

Muscat said Malta wanted there to be an agreement, while insisting that the European Union could not move away from its principles as reflected in the proposed deal.
