Arrivals in collective accommodation up 13.8% over 2010
Total arrivals in collective accommodation establishments amounted to 119,637, up by 13.8% when compared to 2010. Total nights spent increased by 12.8% to 634,908.
According to statistics released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), non-resident arrival numbered 107,797 while non-resident nights were calculated at 611,063 during last April.
Although the figures are higher than April of last year, the average length of stay remained the same and stood at 5.7 nights. The 4-star hotel category recorded a substantial increase in non-resident arrivals (33.8%), while non-resident arrivals in other forms of collective accommodation went down by 7%.
A decrease in the number of resident nights brought about a drop of 0.1 of a night in the average length of stay when compared with the same month in 2010. Resident arrivals were slightly more than last year and stood at 11,570.
The net occupancy rate in collective accommodation establishments stood at 56.1%, up by 6 percentage points when compared to 2010. This was mainly caused by an increase in the occupancy rate in the 4-star hotel category, which stood at 70.5%.
The occupancy rate for non-residents was calculated at 54%, while the rate for residents was 2.1%. All types of collective accommodation establishments registered increases in occupancy rates when compared to 2010 levels.
During April, total arrivals and nights in Malta increased from last year and amounted to 112,975 and 614,863 respectively, with an average length of stay of 5.4 nights. Similarly, arrivals and nights in Gozo and Comino, went up by 12.8% and 24.4 % respectively.
This caused an increase in the average length of stay, which was calculated at 3.1 nights.
The occupancy rate for Malta escalated to 56.9%, while that for Gozo and Comino reached 39.6%. The resident occupancy rate was higher in Gozo and Comino than in Malta and amounted to 12.4%.
The non-resident occupancy rate in Malta stood at 55.3%.
On a national level, total bed-places numbered 37,722, of which 84.5 per cent were in hotels. A majority of these bed places, 36,036, were provided by collective accommodation establishments in Malta. In Gozo and Comino, total bedrooms numbered 820 with an average of 2.1 beds per room.
