UHM calls for meeting with ALPA, Employers' urge stakeholders to avoid strikes

The Union Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) has requested to meet with officials from the pilots’ union, while the Malta Employers' Association and Chamber of Commerce calls for all involved to avoid industrial action "at all costs."

Following the decision by the pilots’ association (ALPA) to take industrial action, the Union Haddiema Maqghudin has requested to meet with ALPA.

In a press statement, the union - which represents over 400 workers at Air Malta - said the meeting will discuss the effects of industrial action on the airline, the workers, the tourism industry and the economy in general.

"This will be done while analysing the advantages and disadvantages of an industrial action during such a sensitive moment for Air Malta and its employees," the union said.

It also called on those involved to allow time to pass before they take stands which would make it difficult for serious and productive discussions to take place. The union added that Air Malta's restructuring process is of concern and worry for the workers and their families. It called on all parties involved to make a greater effort so the impact on both the company and its workers would be mitigated.

UHM said this week it also plans to meet with Finance Minister Tonio Fenech

Later, the Malta Chamber of Commerce Industry and Enterprise and the Malta Employers’ Association issued statements appealing to both Air Malta and ALPA "to engage in constructive discussions and avoid the planned disruption of service."

They said the problems Air Malta faces "are structural and have been long in the making and cannot be solved by engaging in disruptive industrial action."

They also said that any strike action "will only damage the airline further and increase the possibility of closure that will not be in anyone’s interest, particularly when one considers the domino affect this will have on the entire country."

They expressed hopes that the meeting scheduled between the government and the unions will yield positive results.

Disrespectful references and expressions of bubbling resentments towards our politicians, whoever they may be or to whatever spectrum they belong, does not solve any of our problems. Absenting oineself from home and from the comforts of your loving family, for very frequent and long duration of duty in the service of your country, whether its by private jet, by train, by ship by car or by bus, is no fun at all, I can assure you. One has to be in it and experience the ingratitude of service to really appreciate what i mean. Salvino Giusti

Let us all keep our sanity for the benefit of so many families involved. Our National Airline can never fail whatever the financial or economic circumstances. As a sovereign State Membwer of the European Union it is incumbent upon us to scrupulously ensure attendance at the so very ferequent high level meetings in Brusselks. In the absence of Air Malta can you ever image the Maltese Prime Minister, all Cabinet Min ister, hundreds of top echelon Maltese Civil Servants, experts and adviserstravelling from Valletta to Sicily by Virtu Ferry and from Sicily connewct on a Eurostar or ICE£ train tyo Brussels. We can certainly raise this very important handicap with the EU Commiiiiission in our negotiations on the future of Air Malta. sg

The Government will never allow AIrMalta to shut down. Otherwise how will the likes of all the Ministers and their entourages, RCC, all the Government big shots who to and fro to Brussels week in week out for their meetings & conferences get to Brussles. Surely not on RyanAir??? Mur ara!!!

@ Martin Borg How wrong you are. ALPA is looking after its own members, whilst the UHM is looking after the interests of thousands of employees in the tourist industry which will collapse the minute after Airmalta does. @ Xifajk "bBil-bajd " if you show your name. Other comments are very much superfluous.
