Saunders in tough meeting at MTA as Air Malta reinstates trainee pilots

Air Malta CEO Peter Davies could not make a marketing presentation to the MTA this week, since he was away on a two-week vacation.

CEO Peter Davies – who is on a half a million euro salary – took his vacation during a month which in the airline industry is considered to be the busiest of all.

Chief commercial officer Philip Saunders gave the presentation to the Malta Tourism Authority board in his stead.

MaltaToday is informed that Saunders was given a very tough time by MTA members who are ill at ease with parts of Saunder’s thinking on the national airline.

Saunders is also on a six-figure salary and a close associate of Davies. Before joining Air Malta, Davies was managing director of Air Southwest. He had more than 27 years of experience with other airlines. Most recently, he was chief executive of Caribbean Airlines in the West Indies. Air Southwest announced last week that they will be closing down. Before joining Air Malta, Davies bought a hotel in the UK at the end of 2010 and invested heavily in transforming a historic 15-room country house hotel.

And in an interview with MaltaToday, Air Malta Chairman Louis Farrugia confirmed that the 11 trainee pilots that had their jobs terminated by Peter Davies were reinstated after Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi intervened in a last-minute meeting with the pilots' union chief Dominic Azzopardi.

In his extensive interview, Farrugia talks of the challenges facing Air Malta and the need for a culture change.

Some apologist's comments are simply unbelievable. According to them there is no difference between being 100% focused on the place of work and in full control of what is going on and hands on the situation to being on vacation anywhere in the world with anything but you job duties on your mind! Simply unbelievable! However, I do agree to this line of thought on one thing. It surely does no difference to his pay cheque. He will still keep on earning more than a thousand euros (+€1000) a day whether he is working or not!!!!! How's that for not being a Cuc Malti eh?

Good Morning everyone, at least the discussions that are touted to be going on at the moment with unions etc would have been speeded up with the gentleman who is paid to take decisions around. Not knowing what is going to happen to your livelihood is already stressful. Knowing that that agony is being prolonged so that someone takes a holiday is Torture. Seems like a situation 'I'm all right .... you Jack!!

I'm sorry but some people think that CEOs have to be tied to their desks to carry out their duties. What difference does it make for the companby whether the CEO is saitting at his desk or in the boardroom or on holiday? In the first place there are other executives running the show, in the second place top executives these days are able to do their work out of their office. Contacts are kept by means of mobiles, meetings are held by means of cams. As if these days people communicate by telegrams, or faxes? Another stupid comment relates to the reinstatement of the 11 trainee pilots at the behest of the PM. Somebody commented that this is political interference completely oblivious to the fact that the government is a stakeholder in Airmalta. Therefore de facto and de jure the government is perfectly entitled to have a say in the operations of Air Malta. And isn't the PM government? So much for common sense.

NO - he should not have gone on holidays at this time of the year and in such a sensitive moment for the airlines future. This is not the ideal time for the top man of a ailing company to go holiday making, more so considering the lumpy package he managed to secure for himself. Being so brilliant, unlike his fellows ciewc Maltin, he should have taken this 'small sacrifice' on his part into consideration before signing his lucrative contract. Come on guys. Can't you see that we are back to the 60's. As long as you are a foreigner or a blue eyed boy coming from the inner circles of friends of friends, you can practically get away with murder. All us others have to bear the constant pressures of striving to make ends meet. And yes, we do sometimes go out for a pizza or try to take an economical holiday abroad with our families, mind you. Surrounded by so much stresses and breaking point situations in our daily lives, don't we all deserve a small dose of stress relief every now and then?

Well he has got plenty to smile about. A pity he is not a cuc malti

Cry me a river the nations punching bag my foot, The guys on 500k the airlines on it's knees, staff are still working extra hours for no pay an he has the audacity to take a holiday, even a weekend off is too much. On that kind of money he should have already sorted the whole mess out and if he cant resigned but maybe he's already got the maltese bug of not knowing what that word means, besides after all he is the so called expert in saving airlines(cough cough). but again who knows whats the real motive behind saving KM.

@jafarrugia A month off? I think u really need to read between the lines a bit better and the KM CEO taking 2 weeks off even at this time of year is hardly earth shattering. Aftera all the guy was hired as a sacrificial lamb ( albeit a well paid one ) for the long years of mismanagement and the crippling political interference ( still going on according to this article ) which brought the airline to it's knees. The ploy seems to be working since the bile being thrown at this gentleman is incredible. After all he is human and needs a break from being the nation's punching bag.

'Air Malta Chairman Louis Farrugia confirmed that the 11 trainee pilots that had their jobs terminated by Peter Davies were reinstated after Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi intervened in a last-minute meeting with the pilots' union chief Dominic Azzopardi'. At least it has become very clear what was on the Pilot's Association's Agenda in their meeting with the PM. The statement by the Chariman is very illuminating, highlighting once again that this government has perfected the art of politicial interference despite always claiming otherwise. The plan is to keep Air Malta hanging on at least till the PL is in government so the latter will get the priviledge of closing it's doors.

Hundreds of jobs on the line, workers worried about how they are going to make ends meet, if they will be able to find another job. Years of dedication down the drain and Mr Davies enjoys a month off, no doubt with full pay? In the mean time more managers being employed from the blue eyed background. Well at least the pilots got what they wanted, i guess the rest will just have to bend over and take it since no one is fighting for you.sad but true.
