Updated|Gaddafi to be stripped of national honours
Government announces that it intends to present a motion to strip deposed Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi of honours awarded him by Malta in 1975 and 2004.
Gaddafi was made honorary member of the “Xirka Gieh ir-Repubblika” on December 5, 1975 and honorary companion of the National Order of Merit on the February 8, 2004.
The resolution will be presented when Parliament re-convenes after the summer recess.
Honours bestowed on the Libyan leader by Malta can only be revoked by the President acting on a resolution approved by Parliament, the Attorney General had said in March.
In reaction, the Labour Party agreed with the government’s proposal, adding that the resolution should be presented in Parliament jointly to represent the country’s solidarity with the will of the Libyan people.
