PL calls for impartiality on state tv

Labour MP Gino Cauchi, has called on the chairmen of the Broadcasting Authority and PBS, to uphold and respect the principles of balance and impartiality on national television.

Addressing a press conference, MP Gino Cauchi qouted a number of parliamentary repliesregarding Television Malta and the coverage to the Labour Party on PBS news.

On PBS news

                           Appearance            Interviewed

Prime Minister                                         490                        156

Opposition leader                                    265                        34

Ministers, parl. sec & assistants             1,171                     365

Labour parl. Group                                   220                        24

Cauchi charged that this shows "planned subtle imbalance" which the PL has been suffering throughout these last few years.

Now that the general election is approaching, “it looks clear there’s a plan to use the national tv station as a propaganda tool by the PN till the elections,” Cauchi said.

He added that the Broadcasting Authority has to be proactive and as a regulator checks out that things are not done in the first place and wait till someone complains to take action.

The Labour spokesperson said that the party is not taking this action to hinder PBS but to rispire faith in the national station, a station financed by taxpayers’ pockets.
