Cospicua mayor resigns from Labour, hangs on to mayorship pending appeal

Cospicua mayor Joe Scerri has resigned from the Labour party, saying the PL had explained to him that his position was no longer tenable.

But Scerri will retain his post as an independent mayor, pending his appeal of a sentence that found guilty of nepotism and banned from serving as a councillor for five years.

“After the appeal is decided, I will definitively decide whether I will remain in this role,” Scerri said in a statement Monday evening.

Scerri was found guilty of failing to withdraw from a council meeting that discussed the appointment of his nephew’s wife, who had applied for the post of executive secretary.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi banned him from being a councillor for five years, the maximum, and fined him €500.

Two totally different cases. . Regards Engerer he is only a member of the PL and his court case came up after switching his alliance. Whilst Mr. Scerri is a member of PL's political set up, in fact Mr Scerri did not complain about PL's action and was gentleman enough to understand and acted accordingly. His remaining as mayor until his appeal is heared and judged is in line with common sense. Unlike gonziPN , PL did not try to score political points by trying to look clean and went about treatening its members when the same happened to nationalist mayors or councillors.

i personally think the PL should have shown more support to Joe Scerri. so PL accepts cyrus engerer with the party swith a court case pending but shows a cold shoulder to Joe. Kuragg Joe, nahseb ha tinduna min jien mil-laqam :)
