Union announces trade dispute with Casa Paola management, launches industrial actions
Solidarjeta alleges that the home’s management declined to begin discussions on a collective agreement and even retaliated against its employees who joined the union
Solidarjeta has formally registered a trade dispute with the management of elderly home Casa Paola and announced a series of industrial actions.
The union said the dispute follows the care home’s refusal to enter negotiations on a collective agreement, as well as what it described as retaliatory and intimidatory behaviour towards employees who joined the union.
According to Solidarjeta, it was officially recognised on 23 February 2026 as the sole union authorised to represent its members in collective bargaining with Casa Paola.
The union claims that the home’s management declined to begin discussions on a collective agreement covering nurses, senior care assistants, care assistants, health aides and maintenance staff.
The union also said some members had reported retaliatory actions after joining the organisation.
In response, Solidarjeta initiated a formal trade dispute and stated its members have voted to take industrial action, authorising the union to call a strike if necessary.
A number of directives will come into force from 7am on Saturday, 14 March. These include refusing unscheduled shifts with less than 24 hours’ notice unless they are paid at the applicable overtime rate, and declining duties that fall outside employees’ designated roles.
Union members will also limit certain tasks, including accompanying only one resident at a time to hospital or medical appointments and washing a maximum of six residents per shift.
Solidarjeta noted the directives are intended to safeguard both staff and residents by ensuring manageable workloads and respect for workers’ responsibilities while maintaining essential care services.
“These directives will remain in force until Casa Paola management recognises that Solidarjeta is officially recognised as the sole union entitled to represent its members in collective bargaining, reinstates any workers who were dismissed or told that their contract will not be renewed, and begins to act accordingly, towards the union and its members.”
