IC1 back in operation after temporary shutdown

The first interconnector (IC1) is back in operation following a coordinated shutdown due to technical interventions at the Ragusa Terminal Station in Sicily. 

The scheduled intervention required the temporary suspension of IC1 to allow for the safe rerouting of control cables as preparation for a new 220kV hybrid switchgear, which is vital for the integration of the second interconnector (IC2) currently in works. 

These projects, co-financed by the European Union's Regional Development Fund, are essential for reducing carbon emissions and facilitating the further integration of renewable energy sources.

The works were coordinated by Enemalta plc, Interconnect Malta, Terna Energy Solutions, and the Italian Transmission System Operator. 

“The diligent service of these technical teams ensured that these works were finalised while prioritising safety and system reliability,” Minister for Energy Miriam Dalli said.
