Bad weather cancels number of Good Friday processions

All processions in Gozo and in Rabat, Malta have been called off

All Good Friday processions in Gozo have been called off due to severe winds and isolated showers forceasted on Friday.

A yellow weather warning for strong winds and unstable conditions led parishes to cancel many of these events just hours before they were due to begin.

The Good Friday procession in Rabat, Malta, has also been cancelled. Meanwhile, in Mosta, organisers are expected to decide after the afternoon liturgical service whether the event will go ahead as planned.

In Paola, the procession has been moved indoors at the Paola parish church.

The procession in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, which is famous as one of the longest processions on the islands, was also called off on Friday afternoon.

Good Friday processions are a long-standing tradition in Malta.

This custom dates back to medieval times, when large crowds of Catholics would gather in village squares across Malta and Gozo to witness the processions.

Popular processions, drawing large numbers of participants, take place in, among others, Bormla, Isla, Birgu, Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Rabat, Qormi, Żejtun, Mosta, and Naxxar.
