WATCH | Prime minister demands entire construction industry work responsibly

Prime Minister Robert Abela demanded all operators in the construction industry to work responsibly.

Abela was fielding questions from MaltaToday when he was asked about the damning architect’s report on the state of a Naxxar construction site being developed by Anton “Il-Franċiż” Camilleri.

Earlier on Wednesday, an architect’s report described the site as “extremely precarious,” as the report further shed doubt about the site’s ability to hold the weight of the flats intended to be built.

When asked whether the situation is worrying for him, Abela said that he is treating the issue very seriously. 

He insisted that government, through the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), was very helpful to the evacuated families, as he assured that the authority and the OHSA are monitoring every step of the emergency works.

Here, Abela demanded that all operators in the construction sector follow all regulations, especially those regarding the safety and peace of mind of residents who live near construction sites.

When reminded that reports about the Naxxar site had been piling in for years before the incident, Abela stated that the BCA had been monitoring the site for a while now. He also said that fines tied to the site were also issued in the past.
