Government has transferred a new facility from INDIS to ST Microelectronics as part of a €250 million investment.

The collaboration between government and the semiconductor giant was described as a move to place the country at the heart of the industries shaping the global future.

The new factory is set to be a hub of innovation, featuring advanced technology, automation, and robotics.

Prime Minister Robert Abela said that the facility will be dedicated to producing some of the world's most sophisticated microchips and components, which are essential for international markets in sectors such as satellites, aviation, and advanced electronics. This is expected to increase the value of national production while improving Malta’s international reputation as a capable host for top manufacturing firms.

Abela added that while automation provides workers with more advanced tools to increase production, it also necessitates a focus on higher training, new skills, and better-paying careers. He noted that the initiative aligns with an economic model that prioritises the quality of jobs over the number of positions.

Meanwhile, Economy Minister Silvio Schembri described the project as evidence of the trust global companies have in Malta.

He noted that the investment aligns with the Malta Vision 2050, adding that it is a step toward an economy which focuses on added value.
