Restaurateur Benny Muscat, the “heart and soul” behind La Buona Trattoria del Nonno, Ta’ Marija, and Palazzo Pescatore, has passed away at age 86.

In a Facebook tribute, La Buona Trattoria del Nonno described Muscat as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, businessman, a friend to many, and as a man whose creativity, charisma, wisdom, and unmistakable presence touched generations.

“Benny was more than a restaurateur; he was a true icon and pioneer of hospitality in Malta. A visionary, larger than life, and truly one of a kind. Nonno built more than just restaurants — he built experiences, memories, friendships, and a way of life centred around generosity, passion, respect, and love for people.”

“Although our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through his beloved family, the businesses he built with pride, and every life he touched along the way,” the post said, affirming that Muscat’s spirit will forever remain part of Trattoria del Nonno, Ta’ Marija Restaurant, and Palazzo Pescatore.

Beginning his career as a teacher, Muscat soon acted on his dream to open a Maltese restaurant serving the authentic dishes his grandparents had taught him to cook as a child. Ta’ Marija was the first traditional Maltese restaurant and was named after his wife, who also provided live entertainment to customers.

The business was succeeded by Muscat’s children Ben and Lara, who took comfort in the fact that “somehow, as if written in the stars, Nonno finally got to witness Arsenal become Champions once again,” which they said was something he had hoped for over the last 22 years.

The funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Church in St Paul’s Bay on Thursday 28 May at 8am. A wake to celebrate Nonno’s beautiful life will follow from 11am at La Buona Trattoria del Nonno.

In lieu of flowers, the Muscat family kindly requests memorial donations be made to Hospice Malta, expressing their immense gratitude to the staff who gave their love, care, and support throughout these past years.
