Alex Borg uncontested for PN leadership
PN councillors will be asked to reconfirm Alex Borg after nobody showed interest in contesting his leadership in a post-election vote required by the statute
The Nationalist Party has announced that Alex Borg was the only person to submit a declaration of interest for the post of party leader, after the seven-day period for expressions of interest closed at 6pm on Wednesday.
The PN's Electoral, Records and Data Commission confirmed that Borg's declaration was the sole one received for the post.
Under Article 90a of the party's statute, the call for declarations of interest was open for seven days, running from Wednesday, 24 June to Wednesday, 1 July.
The process began after the PN General Council launched the leadership election a week earlier.
After receiving Borg's declaration, the Electoral Commission forwarded it to the Candidates Commission, which will now conduct the due diligence checks required by the statute.
Once this verification process is complete, the Candidates Commission will submit a report to the PN Administrative Council and the Electoral Commission, stating whether Borg satisfies the criteria to stand.
The Electoral Commission will then have three days to formally open nominations, which will remain open for five days.
Only Borg, provided he passes the verification process, will be eligible to submit a nomination during that period
