Rich, connected and accused of contracting the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, business magnate Yorgen Fenech’s trial by jury is finally underway.

Almost nine years after Caruana Galizia’s assassination and six years after Fenech’s arrest, the final chapter in this gruesome story is unfolding at the law courts in Valletta.

Fenech is accused of complicity in the journalist’s murder—the man who hatched the idea, financed it to the tune of €150,000, and urged the hitmen to act fast.

Fenech is pleading not guilty to the charges.

In his opening statement to jurors, Attorney General lawyer Anthony Vella did not mince his words: “Without Yorgen Fenech’s role, Daphne would not have been killed.”

But how did we arrive at this point?

MaltaToday drew up a timeline of key events linked to Caruana Galizia’s murder, the arrests and trials of those who carried out the hit job and supplied the bomb, and the arrest of Yorgen Fenech.
