Malta International Airport recorded 1,079,703 passengers in June, translating into an increase of 16.9% compared to the same period last year.

In a statement issued on Friday, MIA explained that the most popular markets remained largely unchanged from previous months, with the United Kingdom once again topping the list with a 21.2% market share. Passenger traffic to and from the UK increased by 14.6%.

The United Kingdom was followed by Italy, where passenger traffic increased by 8.5%, Poland by 52.4%, Germany by 4.7%, and Spain by 15.3%.

MIA also operated more flights, increasing available seat capacity by 20.6%. However, the seat load factor fell by 2.7 percentage points to 84.2%, meaning a slightly smaller proportion of seats was occupied than last year. Despite this, the airport still welcomed more passengers overall.

In an effort to build on Malta’s connections to the Scandinavian region, MIA said it also inaugurated a new trip to Denmark’s Billund on 3 June.

The airport added that five days later, it welcomed its first-ever flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York operated by American carrier Delta Air Lines.
