Government sets up AI Governance Council

An Artificial Intelligence Governance Council has been established to provide strategic oversight of the government’s growing number of AI initiatives.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the government said the council would help it work more effectively to create new opportunities through AI and deliver greater value to citizens. 

The council will be chaired by the chief AI officer and supported by the Artificial Intelligence Governance Unit. It will bring together key stakeholders to develop a coherent approach, ensure compliance with the EU AI Act, and avoid duplicating efforts.

Malta is the EU’s leading user of generative artificial intelligence, with a recent Eurobarometer survey showing that 38% of Maltese use generative AI every day in their personal lives—the highest rate in the EU and almost double the European average of 20%.
