WATCH | Young man filmed breaking car window in Swieqi

The footage circulating on social media shows a group of young men walking in Triq il-Keffa at around 6:15am.

All of a sudden, one of the people featured in the video is seen punching a car mirror until it fell off the vehicle.

Swieqi is frequently at the centre of similar anti-social behaviour during Malta’s peak tourism season. In July, police fined 12 people after they were seen throwing glass bottles off a roof, as the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) found that the property in question was in breach of its licensing conditions.

Speaking to MaltaToday, one resident explained that the situation in the locality has improved since authorities ramped up enforcement, but there is still much more to be done.

The resident explained that the recently-enacted on-the-spot fines are a good deterrent that needs strengthening.

He further noted that inspections on short-let accommodations have increased but are still “lacking.”

The resident acknowledged the fact that Swieqi’s community police are “performing miracles,” noting that the unit is severely short of the resources it requires to police the area.
