Gozo goes dark as Enemalta confirms major cable faults

Gozo is facing a major electricity interruption after two of the three 33kV high-voltage feeders supplying the island from Malta developed faults.

Enemalta said on Friday evening that technical teams are working to locate the cable faults so that repairs can begin without delay.

With only one feeder currently available, there is insufficient capacity to restore electricity to all affected customers via the network. The faults have also affected one of Gozo's two distribution centres, further limiting the supply currently available for distribution.

Additional teams and mobile generators are being deployed to Gozo to provide alternative supply wherever technically possible, with electricity to be restored progressively as these are brought into operation.

Locality affected are Fontana, Ghajnsielem, Gharb, Ghasri, Kercem, Munxar, Nadur, Qala, Rabat (Victoria), San Lawrenz, Sannat, Xaghra, Xewkija, Zebbug (Gozo)

Enemalta has acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the disruption, particularly in the current heat and to people in the affected areas.

Supply will be restored progressively wherever possible, Enemalta said, adding that it will keep the public updated.

PN leader Alex Borg calls for political accountability after power went out during Gozo home visits

Whilst conducting home visits in Gozo, Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg also experienced power cuts. Taking to social media, he called for Energy Minister Miriam Dalli to take political accountability.

In a video on Facebook, the PN leader said he was on a home visit in his district in Gozo when the power went out. His aides soon informed him that “more than half of Gozo had no electricity”.

"In 2026, we shouldn't still be experiencing this type of power cut," Borg said, adding that he wanted clear answers on the way forward.

Borg said Malta and Gozo have faced repeated power cuts throughout the summer, and had called weeks ago for Energy Minister Miriam Dalli to take political responsibility.

He said he wants the Public Accounts Committee to discuss a report commissioned by the Auditor General, and for the government to account for the more than €100 million it says it has invested in the energy distribution system across Malta and Gozo.

He said hundreds of businesses and families across both islands have been affected by the outages, which have also left people facing greater heat as a result of the cuts.
