Malta seeks details from Nepal over four Maltese rescued from floods

The Maltese authorities are seeking more information from Nepali authorities after four Maltese were listed among the 184 foreign nationals rescued from devastating floods.

High level government sources told MaltaToday that the Foreign Affairs Consular Department was chasing Nepali authorities for more details.

So far, the Foreign Ministry has not been made aware of any Maltese nationals who may have been in Nepal when flood waters from a collapsing mountain glacier destroyed several villages.

Nepali officials said more than 600 people have died and at least 2,426 people are missing following devastating flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday. The country remains on “high alert” for more floods as the hard-hit Himalayan border region turns into “swampland”, the Nepali foreign minister said on Saturday. The death toll is expected to rise.

Meanwhile, Nepal Tourist Board on Saturday confirmed that 184 foreign nationals have been rescued so far. It said it was also in communication with one person from Belgium and two people from Spain. Its latest update said a further 420 tourists are still unaccounted for.

Nonetheless, the list of nationalities rescued so far also included four Maltese nationals.

The Maltese Government sources said consular services were trying to establish the identities of the four individuals.
