Public EV charging network grows by 40% to 558 points

Malta’s public electric vehicle charging network has expanded to 558 charging points, the Climate Action Authority (CAA) announced.

The expansion follows the addition of 150 charging points over the past few months, representing a 40% increase in the network.

The CAA took over responsibility for the charging network after infrastructure previously operated by GoTo fell out of use following the company’s withdrawal from Malta.

“What we inherited was a network that belonged to a private company and that had gone idle,” CAA CEO Abigail Cutajar said. “A lot of technical and logistical work was needed to bring it back into service, and we began that work the moment responsibility passed on to us.”

Of the 150 charging points added to the network, 100 formed part of the former GoTo infrastructure and were brought back into service.

The authority installed a further 50 new charging points across 33 localities in Malta and Gozo.

Cutajar said the expansion responds to growing demand from electric vehicle drivers as more people make the switch to electric mobility.

“It’s our job to make sure the charging network keeps pace with that shift,” she said. “This is only the first step; we have more in the pipeline to keep growing this network.”
