Retired judge Silvio Meli dies aged 72

Retired judge Silvio Meli has died on Monday morning, aged 72.

Meli served as a magistrate from 1990 to 2001, then became a judge and retired in 2019.

He worked in the Attorney General’s office before becoming a magistrate.

Meli specialised in civil law, authored several publications on aspects of the law, and lectured at the University of Malta’s Faculty of Law.

He also served as the founding president of the Fair-Trade Commission and President of the National Commission against Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Prime Minister Robert Abela posted a tribute to Meli, remembering him for his “strong sense of justice, particularly to the most vulnerable members of society.

"I appeared before him in Court on many occasions, both when he served as a Magistrate and later as a Judge," Abela said.

"He will be remembered not only for his contribution to the administration of justice, but also for the humanity, integrity and sense of service that guided him throughout his life."

Judge Meli was married and had three children.
