Construction tops workplace accident figures in first half of 2026

The highest number of non-fatal workplace accidents were recorded in the construction sector, according to a recent report by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

Workplace accidents in the construction sector amounted to 15.3% of the 1,015 non-fatal accidents reported in the first six months of 2026.

Non-fatal injuries to workers in the administrative sector followed closely after at 13.2%, along with a further 118 cases, or 11.6%, in the manufacturing sector.

These injuries were predominantly sustained by men and Maltese nationals.

One-third of these non-fatal accidents affected the back, including the spine and vertebrae. However, the most common types were superficial injuries, followed by dislocations, sprains, and strains.

However, the report notes that the number of claims in respect of non-fatal accidents at work declined slightly when compared to the first six months of 2025, lowering from 1,041 to 1,015.

Three fatal accidents at work were reported from January to June 2026, mostly from injuries to the head, such as concussions, or injuries to the entire body. All fatalities were men and Maltese nationals.

The fatal accidents were recorded from managers, machine operators, and elementary occupations.
