Electricity problems go beyond cables and distribution, PN insists
The Nationalist Party insists government can no longer blame climate change or overheating cables as October sees third nationwide power outage in a month
Malta’s electricity problems extend beyond distribution to generation, contrary to government’s claims throughout the summer, the Nationalist Party said.
The party issued a statement on Thursday following the third nationwide power outage in a month, which left most of Malta and Gozo without electricity shortly after 8am.
Enemalta said an automatic protection system had been activated to safeguard the national electricity network following a sudden loss of power.
The system automatically reduces electricity demand when necessary to prevent wider disruptions and protect the network from more serious damage, Enemalta explained.
However, the company did not explain what triggered the protection system in the first place.
The PN stressed that the public cannot continue to be left in uncertainty over electricity supply and deserves a clear explanation of what is happening in the country’s energy sector.
With power cuts persisting into October, the party insisted that government could no longer blame climate change or overheating cables for Malta’s electricity problems.
It called for a serious, long-term vision for the energy sector to bring an end to what it described as “management by crisis”.
Meanwhile, electricity supply is gradually being restored across the islands, with standby generators brought online to increase available capacity.
Technical teams continue to monitor the network and the situation in areas still affected by the outage.
