Weekly newspaper Illum reports that there are currently 353 children placed under care orders, which means that they are placed under the custody of the state due to the precarious nature of their family environment.

However, the report also reveals that, of these 353, there are seven children, aged between nine and 17 years, who are being kept at Mount Carmel. Three of these are being kept in the Young Person's Unit (YPU).

The report details that despite Government's acknowledgment that these children should not be kept in an institution intended for the housing and care of mental patients, there are no indications as to when it these vulnerable children may be housed in an alternate location.

The report also details that, of these 353 children, 76 are foreign while 74 are 'unaccompanied minors'.
